Oh my love! How can this be?
That you have left me for the sea
And now my heart sinks like a stone
Cause I must sail this world alone

To the sea, to the sea
Where my true love waits for me
We must drift a world apart
Until the sea reclaims my heart

In my mind you’ll ever be
Young, eternal, wild, and free
In our time you filled me up
Like the ocean fills a cup

Like the tides that ebb and flow
True love comes and it must go
We will all run out of sand
Just like water through our hands

by Jonathan Lawson

She’s got a knack for forgetting
She’s pretty smart for her dumb luck
She can’t hold on to her car keys
But she knows just how to open me up

She thinks the world is out to get her
But she’s got that world on a string
She’s got me wrapped around her finger
She’s all that I will ever need

She just is the caffeine in my coffee
She just is the skip that’s in my step
All you fellas ask me why
But I cannot specify all the reasons she is mine
She just is

We’ve shared our share of nasty weather
And we’ve taken broken roads alone
But she’s still the star that I can follow
She’s still the reason I come home

She just is the yellow in my sunshine
She just is my fireworks on the fourth
All you fellas ask me why
But I cannot specify all the reasons she is mine
She just is

I’m not too tired
And I’m not too old
But I’m headed west to try and catch
The last drop in a sea of gold

My feet are fire
And my legs are lead
And I’m racing shadows, trying to stay
One step ahead

And I am gonna chase the sun (twilight’s just begun)
Like an outlaw on the run
I’m gonna chase the sun

Time is more
Than heavy hands
Whirling planets and trading tides and
Slipping sand

And time can take
Your life away
Before you know the shadows fall
And gold fades to grey

by Jordan Lawson, Jonathan Lawson, and Cassandra Lawson

Slingshots, baseball cards
When no one needed walls to separate their yards
Pig tails, sunday dress
We’d dig for buried treasure and then come home a mess
They can’t make me act my age

Hold my, hold my, hold my, hold my hand
Like when you were Lois Lane and I was Superman
Oh my! Oh how everything was new
Back when we had time to kill
Back when we were Jack & Jill

Cell phones, business cards
And cubicles to keep the kiddies working’ hard
Hair back, pencil skirt
The last thing on your mind is getting in the dirt
Follow me, we’re playing hooky

Like summertime when we were young
Noses kissed by golden sun
On the edge and looking down
We held our breath and closed our eyes
Leaped into the deep blue skies
And plunged into the great unknown

So here I am, writing a blog on my magic iphone while rolling down the road in the band van (lovingly called Bertha) through the first major winter storm to hit the north/northeast this winter. Sound like fun? Don’t let my rosy description fool you – it’s really a blast. Like Mr. Urban said, we’re making memories – and I love it. Sometimes “really living” is like eating healthy or getting in shape, we convince ourselves that we’ll do it later but then we wake up one day and realize we’ve procrastinated our way into a dull eventless life. I’m not preaching. Well maybe I am but I’m preaching to myself because I’m the world’s biggest procrastinator (thats right, world champ. You’re welcome). But in this little adventure of ours I have 3 other people crammed into this little van to kick my butt into stepping outside of my coccoon to taste the flavors (both sweet and bitter) of true living. Thanks guys. Tears. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how we have grown so accustomed to the familiar – I drink Starbucks not because its my favorite coffee but because I know what I’m going to get. And settling for familiarity is safer than the risk of trying something new only to be disappointed that it’s not the best. But what about when it is the best? I had the most amazing breakfast in Bisbee, AZ (thanks Wendy!) but what made it amazing was that I had no familiar expectations going in, I just began to eat and was blown away. I guess thats where I see the merit in the unknown. Don’t take me to the nationwide chain store – take me to the local hole in the wall. It may suck, but it may be the best I’ve ever had. And that, class, will do it for me. Put your homework on my desk before you leave.

- Prof. Jonathan

It just takes one step, and I’ll be alright.
Oh, but it haunts me how my heart won’t allow even a try

Sometimes the first step is the hardest. It’s easier to let your brain believe that trying and failing is worse than wondering “what if.” Its funny how, as a songwriter, we make these observations, statements, and often opinions on the way the world is and how it should be – and then in given time those thoughts and opinions come back with a 2×4 to smack us over the heads. In my craft I feel like maybe my songs are a reflection of who I want to be and they try to guide the short comings of the real me. In those times its wonderful to have a band of comrades to drag me along kicking and screaming

This past weekend was our first step. Yeah, we’ve had hundreds of first steps along the way, but to us this is beginning to feel like to wheels of the train are finally catching a little traction. We performed our first opening appearances ahead of Sara Evans (www.saraevans.com) Friday and Saturday, and it was fantastic. I don’t have enough great things to say about Sara and her band and crew! We were treated like family and are so grateful to everyone for taking care of us.

Jordan and I have been professional musicians for several years now, but in a lot of ways we feel like total babies at this. We kinda worked the music biz backwards – my first pro gig ever was on a tour bus. Now that we’ve gotten a taste for it, we’re venturing out there in a 15-passenger van taking driving shifts at night, and making lunch from flat meat we bought at the store! But even though that’s a step down for a lot of musicians, it feels so right to me. I’m with the people I love the most in the world, performing music that we wrote and cultivated, meeting people who are impacted by it. IT’S AWESOME!

So keep in the loop, stay tuned for more adventures from our gypsy caravan (and crazy videos from Cassandra)

– Jonathan
